Favourite Settings/TL?

So, after getting totally addicted to Steve Erikson's Malazan Books of the Fallen, I was really happy to read that this was originally a d20 and then a GURPS world that he invented with a friend of his.. Since then, another friend of mine and I have set upon reworking the world with our own twists, figuring out the Magic system to be something more like Mage:the Awakening (one thing I REALLY dont like about GURPS is the magic system, with the prerequisites)

anywhoo, anyone else interested in this conversion, we will be posting our conversion in here in a month or so..

So, with that out of the way, what are your favourite settings and TL's?

Apart from the Mazalan world, i really like the Desert Storm setting, and also playing with 1500-1600 point super epic characters in a save the universe world. It can be really fun to push the cinematic setting to the edge.

Don't know anything about the Books of the Fallen. My favorite settings though include my own fantasy world, TL rages from 3-5 depending on culture, I enjoy running campaigns at the 150-200pnt level and working up from there. I also love near future settings with TL 6-9 played at 300-500 pnts. And any dark, mysterious setting set in the 19th or 20th century played at 75-125 pnts.

I've also enjoyed running post apocalypse zombie campaigns with friends. You suggest that they make optimum versions of themselves.

Its a great way to introduce new people to the lethality and realism of the system

usually people end up so scared from fright checks that they are puking everywhere or crapping their pants. Its hilarious.

Im having a tough time getting into the future settings, purely because its such a deadly world, and the weapns do *so much* damage, and theres only so much you can explain as realistic futuristic armor.

Though the mecha add-on books are very cool.

Ive also had some success playing in the "SLA" world, another RPG with a bladrerunner-esque world. Its got its own system too, but its even less forgiving than GURPS, and so frikkin COMPLICATED. :) Good world though.
I only recetly moved across to this system from Palladium, and im really enjoying what i have experienced so far..

But i would also have to strongly recommend those Malazan Books of the Fallen to you if you havent read them yet. I just cant say enough good things.

The zombie game sounds like fun, pucking seems to be an all to common result in my spooky sessions... I alternate the fright check table with a similar version I came up with to create a bit more variety.

Sci-fi can be really terminal, I once had a pc accidentally nuke the party with a tactical, that was a sad day. I only tend to run the sci-fi stuff for short periods of time, one shots or campaigns that last no longer than a couple of months.

The series you are talking about is the one by Erikson?

Yeah, check my tribe titled "Malazan Empire" for more info.

          Cool,

I love those books, Erikson is one of my favorite authors. I usually don't go for the sweeping epic style of fantasy but he blows my mind. His concepts are fresh, characters are powerfully and compellingly written and the stories are inspiring. I've read all but the latest one.

GURPS would be a good system to run his setting in, though I think the magic system might have to be tweaked.

He actually based the world of his books on a GURPS world he used to play in :)

I have modified the rules with a friend, we have the Warrens of the magic system as a cosmic modular ability worth 30 -40 points, and each ability lasts 1 second (unless modified to last longer) That way we dont use the magic system in GURPS at all (well, we dont use the spells) and it makes it more like Mage: The awakening

Good idea, I might look at that a bit, some of my players really don't like the GURPS magic system.

Its the only part of GURPS that i must say that I dont like. The system isnt bad, but the spell pre-requisites SUUCK.

Even though many of my players don't like the system, I'm okay with it. Even the prereqs make sense and I've seen those little spells put to very good use by creative players.

I guess so, it just seems really redundant to spend points of having so many spelld that you will never use, but have to keep just to have the ability to cast a single spell.

While I understand the need for control and balance - and in some sense I do like the logic of the prereqs - I don't like this system either. It enforces a bland sameness on wizards. The very predictable nature of the spells doesn't help, either. It really is one of SJG's sacred cows, though, which is why - despite numerous requests - they didn't change it much for 4th Ed.

I've been running GURPS fantasy-based games for years, and I have used mostly home-brewed magic systems, or heavily edited versions of their "Noun-Verb" options. What I would really like to see is a set of Advantage-based magic systems for GURPS, but I understand this idea isn't too popular in some quarters.

I'm revisiting the entire GURPS magic system right now, so that magic in my setting is more personalized. I'm increasing casting times for most spells, making mana more abundant and making most magic dependant on some sort of ritual or medium such as dance or music. I'm playing with the idea that elemantal magic is a different type of magic and will likely use the base rules for this. While meta magic will likely be a base magic not dependant on ritual, but you don't gain ranks from Magery levels of any sort. Certain colleges in the magic book are also going to be specific to druidic tpye earth magic, while a couple of other, such as healing will be clerical... But these are my early thoughts.

One thing I find with the GURPS magic, if you use it strait up from the book, if one person in a hundred or even one in a thousand is a mage then there is really no point or much chance of a technological society developing. Though this makes for some really interesting concepts it does mess with many classic fantasy concepts.

Just remember, they put those rules in for balance, but there is nothing that says that you have to have the prereq's in YOUR campaign. Just be prepared when it gets abused horribly. Besides, I always liked having the prereq's, it made a more creative spellcaster. I used to use Stench and Mopve Earth quite a bit during combats.

    .
. Any technology, if sufficiently more advanced than the viewer, appears as magic. We are currently occupying a world with TL's that span quite the range.
    .
. The traditional TL3 medieval with magic, some lower tech primitives, again with magic, and one area, roughly the size of say, Nevada, with limited access to TL9-10. (Interstellar luxury liner emergency ditch, now stranded.)
